Free Spins Explained: Types, Value and the Rules Behind Them

What free spins are

Free spins are rounds on an online slot that a casino credits to a player's account as an incentive, so the stake for those rounds is covered by the operator rather than taken from the player's balance. Each spin has a fixed stake value set in the offer terms, and the spins can usually only be used on one named game or a short list of games. The UK Gambling Commission's glossary lists "free spins on specific games" as an example of a bonus, so the rules that apply to other bonuses apply to free spins too.

Common types of free spins

  • Welcome free spins are credited to a new account, often after a first qualifying deposit or as part of a package with a matched deposit bonus.
  • Existing-customer free spins come as reload offers, game-launch promotions, loyalty rewards or opt-in campaigns for players who already hold an account.
  • No-deposit free spins are credited on registration or account verification without a deposit. They are usually smaller and often carry tighter limits on what can be withdrawn.
  • Wager-free spins pay winnings as withdrawable cash rather than as bonus funds.

How to work out what an offer is worth

The headline number of spins says little on its own. Four details in the terms decide the real value:

  1. Spins multiplied by stake. 50 spins at €0.10 represent €5 of play; 20 spins at €0.50 represent €10. The smaller headline number can be the larger offer.
  2. RTP of the eligible game. Return to player (RTP) is the long-run share of stakes a game pays back. On a game with 96% RTP, €10 of spins has an expected return of about €9.60 before any other conditions. Short-term results vary widely in both directions.
  3. Wagering requirement. If winnings are credited as bonus funds, they may need to be wagered a set number of times before they can be withdrawn. €8 of winnings with a 10x requirement means €80 of further bets; at 35x it means €280, and every extra bet carries the house edge.
  4. Caps and limits. Look for a maximum win or maximum conversion from the spins, the expiry period for using the spins and for completing wagering, a maximum bet while bonus funds are active, and which games count towards wagering and at what percentage.

A small offer with no wagering can be worth more in practice than a large offer with heavy wagering and a low cap on winnings.

How the rules differ by regulator

Great Britain: UK Gambling Commission

From 19 January 2026, the Gambling Commission's Social Responsibility Code 5.1.1 prevents licensees from applying wagering requirements of more than 10 times to incentives that require customers to play through bonus funds. The Commission's own example of the old position: a £10 bonus with a 50x requirement meant £500 of play before winnings could be withdrawn. The rule applies to all licences, including ancillary remote licences, except gaming machine technical and software licences.

The same change banned incentives that mix product types: licensees must not include more than one type of gambling product (betting, casino, bingo and lottery) within an incentive. The Commission's guidance treats spending on casino products to receive casino spins as compliant, and placing a sports bet to receive free spins as non-compliant. Any excluded games must be clearly stated and easy to find in the incentive's terms.

Malta: Malta Gaming Authority

Under Directive 2 of 2018, MGA licensees must offer players self-exclusion, at least one of deposit limits or wagering limits, and reality checks. The 10x wagering cap described above is a Great Britain rule. For an MGA-licensed offer, read the wagering multiple, game weightings, maximum bet and expiry in the operator's own bonus terms, because those terms set the conditions.

Before you accept free spins

  • Check the operator's licence on the regulator's public register, and that the licence covers the country you live in.
  • Read the full bonus terms, not only the banner: stake per spin, eligible games, expiry, wagering, maximum win and maximum bet.
  • Check whether accepting the offer affects how and when you can withdraw your own deposit.
  • Remember that free spins are a marketing incentive. They do not change the house edge of the game.

Responsible gambling

Treat any bonus as part of the cost of entertainment, not as income. Set deposit limits and time reminders before you play, use the operator's self-exclusion tools if gambling stops feeling under control, and contact a national support service if you or someone close to you is affected.
