CasinoOnline Gambling in Greenland: Laws, Licences and How to Check a Site
Online casino and betting in Greenland are regulated by the Act for Greenland on certain games, with Spillemyndigheden as the licensing authority. A Danish licence alone is not enough: the operator also needs permission for Greenland. Here is how the rules work and how to check a site.
Online gambling in Greenland is legal only with operators licensed under the Act for Greenland on certain games, and Spillemyndigheden, the Danish Gambling Authority, issues those licences. A Danish licence alone is not enough. An online casino or betting site needs permission for Greenland on top of its Danish licence, and you can see that permission in Spillemyndigheden's public register as "Tilladelse i Grønland". When we checked on 14 October 2026, 13 companies with an online casino or betting licence had it.

Does Greenland have its own gambling law?
Yes. A common claim is that Greenland "has no gambling law" and simply follows Danish law. That is not accurate. Greenland has its own act, Lov for Grønland om visse spil, passed by the Danish parliament in March 2011. It applies to games that require a stake and are offered or arranged in Greenland, including on ships in Greenlandic waters.
The act shares its structure and purpose with Danish gambling law: to keep gambling at a moderate level, protect young and vulnerable people, make sure games are fair and transparent, and stop gambling from supporting crime. Spillemyndigheden is the licensing authority and supervises online casino, betting and lottery. Gaming machines and charity lotteries are licensed and supervised by the municipal councils in Greenland, and the police also have a supervisory role.
Which licences allow online gambling in Greenland?
There are two routes for online casino and betting:
- A Danish licence extended to Greenland (§ 7). Only operators with a multi-year Danish licence for betting or online casino can get one, and it can only cover the same games as the Danish licence. If the Danish licence is revoked or lapses, the Greenland permission lapses with it (§ 10).
- A local, income-limited licence (§ 8). Only for people living in Greenland or companies established there. It runs for up to one year at a time, and taxable gaming revenue may not exceed 1,000,000 kr.
Lottery is a separate case: Danske Lotteri Spil holds the permission to offer lottery in Greenland. Offering or brokering games in Greenland without a licence under the act is an offence, and so is advertising for operators that are not licensed under it (§ 45).
How to check if a site may serve players in Greenland
- Open Spillemyndigheden's register of licence holders on spillemyndigheden.dk.
- Search for the site's domain, not just the brand name. Several domains often sit under one company.
- Look at the column "Tilladelse i Grønland" (permission in Greenland). "Ja" means the company may offer its licensed games in Greenland. "Nej" means it may not, even though it is licensed in Denmark.
- You can also filter the register to "Har tilladelse i Grønland" to see only companies with permission.
Older guides, including the first version of this article, described a checkbox for "extraordinary authority". The current register calls it "Tilladelse i Grønland". When we checked on 14 October 2026, 13 of the companies holding a full online casino or betting licence had "Ja". A site's footer or licence logo is not proof, because both can be copied.
What licensed operators must do for Greenlandic players
Operators with permission for Greenland must make key information available in Greenlandic on their website. According to Spillemyndigheden, this includes:
- a statement on the front page that the operator is licensed and supervised by Spillemyndigheden
- the 18-year age limit
- how to complain to the operator, and the deadline for claiming winnings
- information about responsible gambling and ROFUS
- contact details for Greenlandic treatment centres for gambling problems
- that players can take a self-test, set daily, weekly and monthly deposit limits, and exclude themselves
The act also sets marketing rules (§ 17). Advertising must present the chance of winning fairly, present gambling as entertainment, not target under-18s, not suggest that a celebrity's success comes from gambling, and not suggest that gambling solves money problems. Licence holders may not give players credit (§ 16).
Are gambling winnings tax-free in Greenland?
We have not been able to confirm that. In Denmark, winnings from a Danish-licensed online operator are tax-free for the player, but that rule is part of Danish tax law. Greenland has its own income tax system, and we have not found an official source that confirms how winnings from online casino and betting are taxed for people living in Greenland. The Greenland act puts duties on the operators, for example 20% of gross gaming revenue for betting and online casino (§ 25), but that says nothing directly about the player's income tax. If you have large winnings, ask the Greenland tax authority via sullissivik.gl. We will update this section when we have an official answer.
Why it matters
An operator licensed for Greenland is supervised by Spillemyndigheden, must offer deposit limits and self-exclusion, and must respect ROFUS. An unlicensed site has none of those obligations towards you, and you have no Danish or Greenlandic authority to turn to if a withdrawal is refused. For how the rules work in Denmark itself, read our guide to online gambling in Denmark.
Frequently asked questions
Is online gambling legal in Greenland?
Yes, with licensed operators. Online casino and betting offered in Greenland require a licence under the Act for Greenland on certain games. Spillemyndigheden, the Danish Gambling Authority, issues those licences.
Is a Danish gambling licence valid in Greenland?
Not on its own. A Danish licence holder needs separate permission to offer the same games in Greenland. In Spillemyndigheden's register this shows as "Tilladelse i Grønland: Ja". If the field says "Nej", the operator may not offer games in Greenland.
How do I check if an online casino may serve players in Greenland?
Find the site's domain in Spillemyndigheden's register of licence holders and look at the column "Tilladelse i Grønland". The register can also be filtered to show only licence holders with permission in Greenland.
Are gambling winnings tax-free in Greenland?
We have not been able to confirm this. Greenland has its own income tax rules, and the Danish rule that winnings from Danish-licensed sites are tax-free is Danish tax law. Ask the Greenland tax authority via sullissivik.gl if you have large winnings.
Can I use ROFUS from Greenland?
ROFUS is Spillemyndigheden's self-exclusion register, and operators licensed for Greenland must inform players about it in Greenlandic. You sign in at rofus.nu with MitID. If you cannot use MitID, call ROFUS on +45 72 38 60 20.
