Online casino and betting in Denmark are legal only through operators licensed by Spillemyndigheden, the Danish Gambling Authority. This guide explains the licence system, the ROFUS self-exclusion register, when winnings are tax-free, the bonus rules and how to check a site in the public register.
Online casino and betting are legal in Denmark only through operators licensed by Spillemyndigheden, the Danish Gambling Authority. Winnings from a Danish-licensed site are tax-free for the player, bonuses are capped at 1,000 kr with at most 10x wagering, and every licensed site must respect ROFUS, the national self-exclusion register. This guide explains how the system works and how to check a site yourself. It is information, not a list of recommended sites.

Who regulates gambling in Denmark?
Spillemyndigheden issues gambling licences, supervises licence holders and acts against illegal gambling and advertising. It also runs ROFUS and the StopSpillet helpline. Its register of licence holders lists each company's address, its domains, its licence types and whether it may also offer games in Greenland.
A game counts as offered in Denmark when it targets Danish players, for example through a Danish-language site, Danish customer service, payment in Danish kroner, Danish-only payment methods such as Dankort, or marketing aimed at Denmark. An operator that does this without a Danish licence offers gambling illegally. Advertising for gambling operators without a Danish licence is banned in all media.
Which licences exist?
For online play, the two licence types that matter are online casino (roulette, blackjack, baccarat, poker, slot machines and combination games of skill and chance) and betting (wagers on the outcome of events). A company can hold one or both. The register also lists smaller, income-limited licences and land-based permits such as physical bingo and local pool betting.
When we went through the register on 14 October 2026, it listed 91 licence holders across all game types. About 40 of them held a full licence for online casino, betting or both. Our count may drift as licences are granted and expire, so always check the register itself.
How to check if a site is licensed
- Open Spillemyndigheden's register of licence holders on spillemyndigheden.dk (an English version of the page is available).
- Search for the site's domain, for example "example.dk", not just the brand name. Several domains often sit under one company.
- Check the licence types listed: online casino, betting or both.
- If the domain is not in the register, the site is not licensed in Denmark, whatever its footer says.
Licence logos and footer text can be copied. The register is the only reliable source.
Are gambling winnings taxed in Denmark?
Not when you win at an online operator holding a Danish licence for betting or online casino. According to the Danish Tax Agency, the winnings are tax-free for the player because the operator pays a 28% duty on its gaming profit. Winnings from foreign games can also be tax-free, but only when strict conditions are met, such as the game being approved and controlled by a public authority. If you play anywhere other than a Danish-licensed site, check the rules on skat.dk before you assume the winnings are tax-free.
Bonus rules for Danish-licensed sites
Under the executive order on online casino (BEK no. 682 of 11 June 2025, § 29):
- A promotion may not have a value of more than 1,000 kr.
- If a deposit is required, the bonus must match 100% of the deposit.
- Wagering may be at most 10 times the deposit plus the bonus.
- There may be no wagering requirement on winnings from a promotion.
- Every game that can be used to meet the wagering requirement must count 100%.
- Players must have at least 60 days to meet the terms.
- All terms, including a worked wagering example in kroner, must be shown clearly right next to the offer.
Worked example: deposit 500 kr and receive a 500 kr bonus. With 10x wagering on deposit plus bonus, you must place bets of 10 × 1,000 kr = 10,000 kr before you can withdraw winnings linked to the bonus.
ROFUS: Denmark's self-exclusion register
ROFUS (Register Over Frivilligt Udelukkede Spillere) lets you block yourself from gambling across Denmark in one step. It covers online gambling, land-based casinos and betting in physical shops. You can choose:
- a 24-hour break
- exclusion for 1, 3 or 6 months
- permanent exclusion
You sign in at rofus.nu with MitID. If you need help, ROFUS answers on 72 38 60 20 (Monday to Thursday 9:00 to 15:00, Friday 9:00 to 14:00). The exclusion applies to gambling with Danish licence holders. Sites without a Danish licence are not connected to ROFUS, which is one more reason to stay with licensed operators.
Gambling in Greenland
Greenland has its own gambling act, but Spillemyndigheden issues the licences, and a Danish licence alone is not enough. An operator also needs permission for Greenland, which shows as "Tilladelse i Grønland" in the register. Read our guide to online gambling laws in Greenland.
Reviews of Danish-licensed sites
This English-language site does not rank or promote Danish casinos and bookmakers. If you live in Denmark and want reviews of operators with a Danish licence, see our Danish site igamingexplorer.dk, which only covers sites in Spillemyndigheden's register.
Frequently asked questions
Is online gambling legal in Denmark?
Yes, but only with operators licensed by Spillemyndigheden, the Danish Gambling Authority. An operator that targets Danish players without a Danish licence offers gambling illegally, and advertising such operators is banned.
Are gambling winnings taxed in Denmark?
Not when you win at an online operator with a Danish licence for betting or online casino. The operator pays a 28% duty on its gaming profit instead, so the winnings are tax-free for the player. Other rules apply to foreign operators, so check skat.dk if you play elsewhere.
What is ROFUS?
ROFUS is Spillemyndigheden's register of voluntarily excluded players. You can take a 24-hour break, exclude yourself for 1, 3 or 6 months, or exclude yourself permanently from online gambling, land-based casinos and betting in shops in Denmark. Sign in at rofus.nu with MitID or call 72 38 60 20.
How big can a casino bonus be in Denmark?
A bonus may not be worth more than 1,000 kr, the wagering requirement may be at most 10 times deposit plus bonus, there may be no wagering on winnings, and players must get at least 60 days to meet the terms.
How do I check if a gambling site is licensed in Denmark?
Search for the site's domain in Spillemyndigheden's public register at spillemyndigheden.dk. Each licence holder is listed with its address, domains, licence types and whether it may also offer games in Greenland. If the domain is not listed, the site is not licensed in Denmark.
Gamble responsibly
Gambling is for adults aged 18 and over and should be entertainment, not a way to make money. If gambling is taking up too much of your time or money, StopSpillet offers free, confidential advice on 70 22 28 25 (stopspillet.dk). You can exclude yourself from all Danish-licensed gambling in ROFUS at rofus.nu. Read more on our responsible gambling page.
